Why do we collect? Is it the desire to preserve art objects, support a rising artist, or to satisfy intellectual curiosity? Inspired Collectors creates a dialogue about our passions as collectors using gifts of art donated to the permanent collection. This will be the first time many of these works have ever been on public display, revealing the commitment these collectors have for the arts.

Accumulating Interiors
Tyanna Buie and Vanessa Diaz

As part of the Currents Series, Vanessa Diaz (South Florida) and Tyanna Buie (Detroit, Michigan) were invited to
collaborate for the first time on a site-specific installation. Diaz’s found furniture
constructions and Buie’s large-scale prints are combined to create fragmented interior
spaces for the viewer to explore. Childhood memories and dreams are recalled as the
artists reflect on family and architectural spaces.

ASG Technologies, headquartered in Naples, FL has recently donated over eighty works of art to the FGCU Art Galleries. This gift compliments FGCU Art Galleries’ growing collection of internally recognized contemporary artists. Joseph Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky, John Buck and Judith Murray are a few of the artists represented in the gift. The works are diverse in the mediums represented including painting, printmaking, ceramics, mixed media sculpture and fiber arts.

At the end of their studies, art majors are required to develop and present a coherent body of self-generated work. This exhibition combines their knowledge of techniques and concepts while drawing on research of historical and contemporary artists.

Thirty-One: An MFA Thesis Exhibition

Discovering her place and identity between two cultures has been a conscious exploration in which Osceola’s work takes root. Her current sculptural pursuit is a series of bas-relief portraits and figures. The focus of these portraits and figures is to illustrate a narrative of different roles she inherently embraces to be part of a modern society. Self-reflections take shape in a series or self-portraits that uncover the layers of inner psyche of an individual turned mother.

Matthew Shlian: Telemetry
Crossroads of Art and Science Residency & Exhibition

As a paper engineer, Shlian’s work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial
design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy
to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifests in drawings and three-dimensional
forms. Researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principles;
Shlian sees their inquiry as a basis for artistic inspiration. Shlian will exhibit
past work and partner with FGCU faculty and students to create new work related to
research being conducted at FGCU.

19th Annual Student Juried Exhibition

Students working in sculpture, drawing, digital media, printmaking, painting and ceramics submit their finest works for this annual juried exhibition. Up to 70 works of art, demonstrating students’ accomplishments and experiments, will be featured. The jurors for the exhibition are local artist, curators and art professionals.

Visual Language
Typography and Creative Writing

When typography, the design and creation of type, is applied to literary texts, this
collaboration can result in a hybrid form of art that provides incredible visuals
and summons intellectually stimulating experiences for both the artists and their
audiences. This exhibition features the work of the Special Topics Advanced Typography
course instructed by Sasha Minsky in collaboration with Jesse Millner’s Narrative
Techniques creative writing class. Students from both courses worked together to bring
literary narratives alive through the use of innovative typography techniques.
