Ijames, Bryan (DMA)
Bryan Anthony Ijames, a conductor, educator, and tenor, has made significant contributions to music education and choral performance. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from the University of Michigan (UM). His professional influence extends internationally, having worked with choirs in the United States and South Africa. He is now an Assistant Professor of Music Education and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Florida Gulf Coast University.
During his doctoral studies, Bryan was a two-time Rackham Graduate School Fellowship recipient. His research focused on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Alice Parson's The Atonement. Additionally, Bryan made his conducting debut at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in 2022 with the UM Men's Glee Club.
Before his doctoral studies, Bryan served as Associate Director of Bands and Choirs at Deland High School and Director of Choral Activities at Park Vista Community High School in Florida. He has inspired many musicians to achieve musical excellence through his roles as choir director in various worship environments and community ensembles. He recently served as the Chancel Choir Director at First United Methodist Church (Ann Arbor) and Associate Conductor of the Ebony Chorale of Palm Beaches.
Bryan holds advanced degrees in choral music education and conducting from Mississippi State University and Eastern Kentucky University, respectively, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from High Point University. He is a member of several professional organizations, including ACDA, NANM, NAfME, and NCCO, and is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
