Environmental Health and Safety – Safety Award for Excellence (S.A.F.E.)

FGCU Environmental Health & Safety has created the FGCU S.A.F.E. Award, an award that acknowledges staff members (A&P, SP, OPS) for exhibiting exceptional effort that reflects the values and mission of Florida Gulf Coast University. The FGCU S.A.F.E. Award provides a systematic method for formal acknowledgement of safety achievements by faculty, staff, or students and a means for publicly announcing such accomplishments to the University Community.

Who is eligible for the S.A.F.E Award?

The Safety Award For Excellence (S.A.F.E) will be based on the Safety Nomination form submitted for that award. All full-time and part-time employees including staff, faculty, and students are eligible. The award will be presented in September of each year for activities during the previous fiscal year.

S.A.F.E. AWARD	AWARD CRITERIA
Outstanding Safety and Health Contribution By Individual	Awarded by nomination to an individual for actions or efforts that have prevented reoccurring injuries or protected property in their department. Applicable to employees on or off campus.
Platinum Excellence Award *	This award is to nominate a department for implementing a safety program that shows continued excellence in the number of workplace accidents. The Platinum Excellence award is given when a department continuously shows no accident or injuries at the workplace. * This award is calculated internally by FGCU Environmental Health and Safety by analyzing previous fiscal year data. No nomination is required. Recipients of this award (click here).
Gold Excellence Award **	This award is to nominate a department for implementing a safety program that shows continuous improvement in the number of workplace accidents. The Gold Excellence award is given when a department shows improvement in minimizing their accidents/injuries. ** This award is calculated internally by FGCU Environmental Health and Safety by analyzing previous fiscal year data. No nomination is required. Recipients of this award (click here).

This course is for all individuals authorized to drive an FGCU-owned vehicle; it is required for anyone driving during the scope of doing university business.

To properly document training completion, please send a copy of your certificate to FGCU's Assistant Director of EH&S, Willie Baca at wbaca@fgcu.edu.

Florida Department of Transportation Online Defensive Driving Course

The Division of Risk Management, with permission from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is currently offering FDOT's interactive Defensive Driving course to state of Florida employees.

Workplace Safety Training through Canvas

In order to remain in compliance with state and federal regulations, everyone must review various safety information on an annual basis. Faculty, staff, and students are required to complete the assigned Canvas course as an easy way to complete safety trainings on an annual basis and join FGCU community's commitment to safety across campus. Incident Investigation Procedures
The supervisor at the activity or location where the accident occurred is responsible for performing an accident investigation. Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and the University Police Department are available to assist with investigations as requested. Investigate all incidents, accidents, injuries and occupational diseases using the following investigation procedures:
- Implement temporary control measures to prevent any further injuries to employees.
- Review the equipment, operations, and processes to gain an understanding of the accident situation.
  - Nearly all workplace injuries occur due to a combination of an unsafe act in the presence of an unsafe condition. For example, a slick, wet road after a summer downpour is a condition. Driving too fast under this condition is an example of an unsafe act. Identifying both the unsafe act and the unsafe condition can prevent similar incidents in the future.
- Identify and interview each witness and any other person who might provide clues to the cause of the incident.
- Provide recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
- Complete the form for workplace injuries to employees, or
- Complete the form for injuries to students, visitors, and non-work related incidents.

The data provided is based on the first notice of injury reports completed and submitted to Worker’s Compensation. This general information is to inform the campus community of the reportable hazards that occurred here at Florida Gulf Coast University either on or off campus.

There are many available resources to help take steps in removing or eliminating the hazard or providing an alternative way of working safely in the workplace.
